What to do in your garden this October!

The heat is on, and it’s time to head outside and enjoy the best of the South African summer. But to get the best out of your garden, you’ll need to do a little work, so find a hat and some sunscreen, and get out there! Gauteng lawns in particular will need some extra care, including deeper watering and feeding – as well as regular mowing. Just don’t forget to add the cuttings to your compost bin! Insect pests will be starting to reappear now that warmer weather is here, so keep an organic insecticide spray within easy reach.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME Would still smell as sweet. Make sure you deadhead yours to encourage them to bloom, buy try and resist cutting too many stems for your vases.

FAREWELL, LILY Your clivias will be putting out their final blooms about now – so enjoy! Once they’re done, that’s your moment to lift and divide them, if necessary.

FERTILIZING GRASS

DO AS MULCH AS YOU CAN Even if you’re in a summer rainfall area, mulch is still an important way to conserve soil moisture. Your shrubs and trees will thank you for it!
